It’s the coziest time of year and we don’t know about you, but curling up with a good book and a blanket in a cozy corner is our idea of a good time when there’s a chill in the air.
Enter a home trend that we hope never goes out of style…the nook. The name itself sounds like the most comfortable spot there is. So, today, we’re celebrating those little spaces in your home that can be easily looked over, but have so many possibilities.
You’ve got well-known types like breakfast nooks and reading nooks, but there were also some new ideas coming from designers that can really customize your home like pet nooks, playhouse nooks under stairs or in hallways, and video game nooks hidden in bedrooms. Each one has its own purpose and we love them all.
Before we get into where you can create a nook of your own, let’s talk about how this feature started gaining popularity in home design?
- They provide privacy. If you live in a busy and noisy home, a nook is a private getaway to your own quiet space.
- They’re special. A nook provides a break from the “usual”. It becomes a special place for you to escape to that allows you to relax with a book, journal, or just your thoughts.
- They’re fun for kids. Some of the best nook ideas are designed with kids in mind. You can create a nook just for play or for certain activities like reading.
- They are easy and inexpensive to set up. You will realize just how easy it is even in a small home–you can even set one up in a closet. Because it’s a smaller space, decorating and furnishing one won’t cost you much. You could actually fill it up with things you already have around the house.
If you’re thinking of making a nook in your home, here are some ideas of places to create your space.
Most nooks are small, making it easy to find a place around the house to set one up. One of the most common locations is under the stairs. Depending on how large the space is, you can set up anything from a day bed for reading to a mini-bedroom for daytime naps, to a space for your pet.

Room corners are also ideal locations. Dining nooks often take advantage of the seclusion offered by room corners. You can set up a corner nook for your kids in their bedroom too. Use color and furnishings to separate it from the rest of the room.
Here are other nook location ideas you can use:
Attic – The low and sloping roof makes the attic feel warm and comfy. If you need a larger nook, the attic is perfect. You can set up a personal library, a private sleeping space or a kids’ play area. The only downside is that it may require more work and money to renovate.
Basement – If you have a finished basement, you could borrow a small part of it to set up a nook. The corner spaces are especially great. You can use it for work, reading or one of your many hobbies.
Hallway – Instead of leaving a boring dead end at the end of the hallway, why not set up a cozy space to relax in? Add some warm lighting for those who want to get lost in a great story or movie on their tablet.
Window – A padded bench under a window is the quintessential reading nook. Simply place a bench under the window or for something a bit more involved, you can have a contractor build something larger complete with padding and storage. Add some throw pillows and a blanket to finish the space.
Closet – If you can spare an extra closet, this is another location that’s small enough to make a little office nook or chill space.
This list could go on and on. Look around your house and think creatively and you’re sure to find the perfect secluded spot for a cozy nook perfect for your needs.
